Madeira : The pearl of Atlantic ocean
Presentation
At more than 900 km from Lisbon off Morocco, Madeira ( the Woody island) is in fact an archipelago of volcanic origin which consists of a main island (Madeira), an island of Porto Santo and of two groups of uninhabited islands. Between sea and clouds, bathed by lights, the exuberant vegetation, the violently steep mountains, the flowers in the marvelous flavor, made of Madeira a real Muse, an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
Main towns : Funchal, Santana, Machico, Calheta
Surface areas : 736 sq. kms.
Population : 265 000 inhabitants
Particularity : The island of Madeira contains about 2500 km of Levada ( irrigation channel) whose construction began in 15th century. Doubtless one of the secrets of a luxuriant vegetation.
