Crete : The Island of the Gods

In the borders of Europe and East, Crete, is for a long time the island of the Gods. Having sheltered the love of Zeus and Europe, the labyrinth of Daedalus, prison of Minautore, it is also one of the origins of the western world. Wild and mountainous, swept by the sun and the winds of Africa, Crete finds its peace of mind in the olive trees areas which stretch on the reliefs of the island.

Main towns : Heraklion, La Canee, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia

Surface areas : 8400 sq.kms.

Population : 602 000 inhabitants

Particularity : located at 800 m height, the plateau of Lassithi, surrounded with mountains, contains thousands of wind turbines which were formerly used for the irrigation of the cultures (pear trees, almond trees ....). Today, they are practically no more in service and are replaced, for the great majority of them, by power-driven pumps.
